We got a chance to test out our new cooking tripod (made by Dan Crowther) at Pennsic 38. Here it is being used to hold a cauldron at just the right height in order to bake bread. Two loaves were baked (the second to perfection! ;) I asked Dan about our use of chain instead of S hooks, and this is his reply:

Actually, a chain is quite period correct. The only "S" hook that would have been used had a hole through it (near the top) and the last link in the chain passed through it. With this configuration one end of the "S" hook gripped the pot and the other went through whatever chain link was desired for the appropriate cooking temp. This style of trammel (a "chain trammel" [go figure :) ]) was used from the Iron Age right on through the Colonial Era.
