Clann tee shirts

This page lists all the Clann T-shirts that have been produced since we first began the tradition in 1999. Clann members will usually buy one or two each year they are produced. When setting up or breaking down at an event in mundane clothing, donning an official Clann tee makes us look more like a real organization to outsiders. Since the TdB have good relations with most of the neighbors at Pennsic, wearing a TdB tee can usually get you into the party!

Click on the thumbnail to see a larger image and some more information about each. The shirt pages include information about who designed the shirts, shirt manufacturer and materials, colors, and current inventory (if available). note: old stock is first come, first served, and the inventory info isn't updated as often as it should be. These are not actual photographs, but mock-ups! The colors are as close as a (slightly) red green color blind person can make them.

Please use this forum to provide more information and discuss the relative merits of each. I have removed the poll that once graced this page - the black one won by a slim margin.

Can't decide

I can't decide which is my favorite. I like the black and the brown. The one that I just don't like so much is the light green. I like the design, but I think it's the color I don't like.

design

I love the design on the 2003. The Ogham on the back is a great idea - it's elegant, attention getting, and folks "in the know" will know that it means we're a Celtic group. The sun/face on the front is killer - was this designed by us or copied from somewhere? It would be nice if I could add some attribution to that. That said, I agree on the shirt color - I'd prefer to have a version of that shirt in a forest green with white lettering or another dark color with light lettering. We could reprint this one easily with a minor change to the year and event text - and since it's only one color it can be silk screened cheaply.

[edit: I also really like the 2001 front symbol, but I'm not too thrilled with the back. It looks like you're supposed to fill in your name on the line! Maybe we can mix and match some of these!]

T-Shirts

I like the grey and the black best, but I never owned a black one.
I would love to get another of the gray and one of the black...
Maybe we could reprint some as a "classic"?

Shirts

The brown is definitely my favorite. I love the design on the light green ones as well but I did not like the shirts that it was printed on.

shirt material

I was going to buy one of the light green (2003) shirts the other day and I tried it on - I don't know if you mean you don't like the color or not, but the material was awful. Its under-sized I think, and too long and very thin. I like 100% cotton and heavy, pre-shrunk myself.

Re: shirt material

It wasnt the color that I had a problem with, it was the actual material of the shirt. I agree that it was too thin and was not as absorbent as the beefy tees. I remember wearing that shirt to setup at one of the events and being the fat, out of shape, guy that I am, I was sweating and the material did not absorb any of it. Made it quite uncomfortable

Vollund's tee idea

I posted a scan of Vollund's Bath gorgon head. My idea is to use this on the front of the shirt and the artwork from the 1999 shirt on the back, updated a bit for 2008. If you like that idea, consider this post a request for text modification ideas for that artwork.

Regarding Vollund's Belenos: I worry that it won't translate well to screen because of all the little pencil lines. We'll probably lose a lot of those, though it will probably look fine anyway. Here's what I would like to do: if anyone has Illustrator CS2, there is a filter to trace into vector format automatically. I don't have that program so I'd have to trace it manually which would take forever. If you have that program and are willing to perform this translation, I will send you the full size scanned image. Once in vector format, I can more easily prepare a cleaner image for screen printing. OR, we could just take it to the shirt place next to the brewery and ask them to evaluate first.

I have Illustrator CS2 on one of my machines at work. If you want to send me the file and give me instructions on what, exactly, you need done with it I can see if I can do it. I dont have any experience in using the program, so if you can tell me exactly what needs to be done with it I should be able to get it done pretty quickly.

Illustrator

Faellon,

I'll send you the image by email and try to get you a run down of what to do with it. Even if we use the image as is, it'll be cool to have it in vector format if possible.

cool...

Looks good! I like it...

Beautiful

I think this deserves to be the shirt back design. Vollund's drawing is so full of rich details that it would be a shame to shrink it down and loose any of the detail. I don't know the resolution limits to screen printing, but if it would compromise the artwork to shrink it, I would rather have this put on the back. Besides if it is on the back I don't have to look at the snakes (imagine smiley face here).

Comyn's picture

I agree

Good point. Should we use it on the front as well as shown here?
If so, should it be exactly the same on the back (including our name and the event and date, or should it just be the image on the back)?

I love it and agree it should be a generous size, and that would be best on the back of the shirt. i also easily imagine this on other items especially a boron

I also agree and like the idea of this illustration being used for the back of the shirt in all its large format glory!

T-Shirts

That place in Patchogue can do the print from any picture that you bring them. They use mac format, but they can download it from the photo section on here or anywhere you have it, and then print it from that. I didn't bring them anything for the brown shirts. I just went there and showed them where the images are, and they did the rest.

I like bigger for the back, but for those of us with a round belly, a big circle on the front just makes it seem bigger and rounder. :)

images

There is no such thing as a "Mac format" image - JPG, GIF, TIF, even BMP (windows) can be read by Macs fine, though how you burn a CD may create problem if you don't understand what you're doing. Images do need to be of sufficient quality for reproduction at larger scale - so simply grabbing the image I posted above off of this site *may* be good enough for the front of the shirt, while it may NOT be good enough for the back (if you want to reproduce fine details). The image above is a 4" square image, and if you try to use that and scale it up, it will get blurry.

Also, we definitely want to create our own art - I personally like to have the text in a Celtic uncial font, not the "Celtic Hand" font which was used on the brown shirt. While it might be easier to read, Celtic Uncial is more like the text used in the illuminated manuscripts. No tee shirt guy is going to know that though... Compare the fonts in the tee shirt pics above for reference.

That said, when we get everything ready, I can post a large image someplace and it's nice to know they are willing to go grab it from there for us. I also like to buy locally when possible.

2008 tees

I messed around with a couple of ideas for the 2008 tee shirt this morning. I put up an image which is an animated GIF which will show you three versions - pretty much the same designs, just different coloring). Please click on the the image and comment away (set for Members and Friends only, sorry). The problem is that Vollund's image really looks best on a white tee, but who's going to want a white tee!? Anyway, take a look and give me some feedback soon so I can make changes. I'd like to get this over to the printer sometime in the next two weeks, so the quicker I hear back the better. Once we settle on something, I'll try to get an idea for how many and what sizes to order.TdB tee 2008 ?TdB tee 2008 ?
