Gher vs. Yurt

Gher vs. Yurt

It's like yogurt, without the go
There has been some controversy over what to call this structure. Some call it a yurt, some call it a gher. The Mongolian nomads who live in these round houses assign different meanings to each word. "Yurt" is more like our word "shack". You wouldn't really go to a friend's house and say, "Hey, nice shack!" (Unless you didn't want to come back.) "Gher" not only encompasses the feeling of our word "home", but also means a spiritual place where the body and soul find restoration. So, while "yurt" may be more fun on the tongue, "gher" means just a little bit more.
