Samhain Newsletter, 2017

Post by Comyn »

Guthrum arrived early to set up his tent and meet Firewood Ed. Faellon and Aislinn were soon thereafter on site and then Comyn and Bragg followed by Brogan and Aonghus and Aoife. Grania travelled many miles with Konrad and Zeta, Konrad split a lot of wood, Godric and Aylen set up their marquee, Maggie came and stayed in Magnus and Helena’s tent. Brahn and his wife came for feast and many tales of the Pennsic he won were told. Eberwulf and Helska were at feast and Eberwulf sang the Mull of Kintyre which was received as well as it was at Imbolc.

Soon after arriving there was a suggestion of packing up on Saturday and only staying through feast, but with guests coming from upstate and Connecticut and the hardy Bragg travelling from as far as Alabama being solidly in the “not leaving early” camp, the general feeling was to stay and hope for passing showers. The dining flys were not raised and there were no ropes and stakes to raise them in any case. Aoife was able to break down on Saturday and escape the general calamity which befell the Clann but we will speak of that later.

Friday night revelry was great fun with music and stories and a wonderful welcome stew by Faellon which was “just right” and enough food to feed an army. Saturday’s day board was extensive with many cheeses and meats (even a steak!) and Gin and Tonic pickles. The Flat Vikings arrived and there was a good round of trading with them for period items. There was no fighting for lack of time to do it, but Bragg and others did bring armour. The Feast of roast pig (tended to throughout the day by Bragg and Brogan) and its many side dishes was excellent. The elections saw the dawning of the third year of the reign of Faellon (an auspicious number), and the rise of a new Druid - Foinoulla! Aoife was named a member and took the Oath of a Kinsmen before the assembled. Godric & Aylen and Konrad & Zeta were named Official Friends of the Clann and presented with honorary bronze medallions for the occassion. The wicker man looked glorious in the glade but the ceremony began rather inauspiciously as the Druids could not seem to get it to burn. During the delay, Brother Comyn (a wandering monk in brown robes and cowl who is seen from time to time) offered to talk to the gathered about his God called Kryst (not sure of the spelling). He disappeared into the night with his lantern as the wicker man began to take light. There was some quiet music (trad tunes mainly) during the daylight, but night time was dominated by stories. The tale of the sacrifice in the reign of Murdock was told to Magnus and Helena, and Aonghus recited an ancient Irish poem and told the tale behind it.

Rains were forecast for Samhain but initially only for the afternoon of the cleanup day and then only for showers. Perhaps because the Clann Banner was never raised, or because there was no attempt to placate the ancestors with offerings or the Gods by the stoking of the Dagda (practices which seem to have fallen out of favor of late) or perhaps even because the Druid had mis-placed his bones, the rains came early starting in the wee hours of the morning Sunday and developing into a steady and torrential downpour by 7am. By 8am both of Comyn’s tents (one erected for Bragg’s use) were both standing in inches of water. There was no let up in the deluge and it continued as the Clann hurried to pack Clann equipment into the Clann trailer as well as their own belongings away. Comyn and Bragg were soaked to the skin by the time they could retreat to the shelter of Comyn’s wagon and Comyn felt quite ill from the labor and the chill of the wind and so the Clann trailer did not leave site last as is tradition. Guthrum and Magnus were still breaking down camp as the shivering Comyn headed toward home.
