table update

Post by Comyn » Fri Aug 31, 2007 1:16 am

Aonghus' table top is 5' long, not 4', is this longer than the standard Clann table? Perhaps someone can measure theirs for us?

Brogan and I got to the shop, grabbed some dinner and got to work around 6:15. We were able to bang out one complete under carriage in about 4 hours. The legs are glued and drying behind the boat trailer along with the long rod that joins them. I left another 8' piece of 2x10 Douglas Fir by the wood pile against the wall (which still needs to be sanded). Overall I had a blast and many thanks to Brogan for helping me get started. We intend to bang out the top of the table sometime next week, and perhaps begin work on the second table as well. As it turned out, it would have been pretty difficult for any more people to be working in the shop at the same time due to limited space, so it's probably for the best that Guthrum couldn't make it. Also, I will try to get a used 500W or 750W portable fire scene lighting head from work for Brogan to keep with the tripod for occasions like this - as night came on, it became really difficult to see in the shop since there aren't any lights on the shop side. Thanks to Aonghus for the use of the shop, we cleaned up pretty good before we split.

table update II

Post by Comyn » Fri Sep 07, 2007 8:46 am

Got together with Brogan again after work - this time picked up dinner on the way over so we didn't waste as much time on that. Completing the table top is far simpler than the undercarriage, technically. However, you can still end up with a problem on the tabletop unless you square the legs really well, as we discovered a little late. Next time I think we should construct a temporary square (or two large L pieces) out of pipe clamps somehow.

Both of us were pretty tired, but we managed to get the leg pieces cut to fit the tabletop and sanded, assemble and drill the tabletop onto the cross pieces, punch out cedar plugs to cover the screw holes, glue them in, sand everything down, stain, and linseed oil the whole table in about 4 hours. This time includes a liberal clean-up of the shop which is, as always, required. Table parts are drying back near the trailers. The wood (including 4 more pieces of 5' cedar) for another table is stacked against the rear wall near the wood pile.

A few pics taken during the construction process have been posted here.

A final assembly shot will be added to the Clann Tables page.

Intentions are to pick up the finished table tonight so that it can be shown at the meeting on Saturday, if we can co-ordinate on that today. Many thanks to Brogan for making this all possible, and Aonghus for making the shop available to us.

Its hard to believe that its been 10 years since I got together with Brogan to make my Clann table. At the time I had bought enough material to make two tables and we made only one, so I've intended to make the second one ever since. A few months back I made the top for a second table (usually the top is done last) but at the time I thought making the under carriage was going to be beyond me. While not perfect, I am happy to report that i did successfully construct one side of the under carriage this weekend. Since I did not follow the cut plan (see the page on Clann Tables where that is provided) I actually don't have enough wood to make the other side yet (I'm missing the 16' x 5-1/8" block) and none of the pieces I had left over from other projects are big enough. Here's a shot of my original leg (now 10 years old) on the left and the new one (not oiled yet) on the right.

If you continue at this pace you can use the new table to dine with your ancestors.

You might be able to pick up a piece of scrap at home depot to fill in the block you need.

Awesome job though.

Thanks! Your comment gave me an idea - I have a friend from work who works part time at Home Depot so I asked him if to keep an eye out for a scrap piece for me and he came in with one today!

When Brogan helped me build my table in 2007, by that time it had been a few years since any Clann tables had been made at all. Something like 5 years had passed since the big Clann Table construction project. Fast forward 10 years (15 years since most of our tables were made) and I decided I needed to make another table. Every event I'd set up my one table in my tent and then, come feast, I'd have to take everything off of it dump the stuff on the floor and carry it out to set up dinner. What a pain! I wanted to make this one myself so I needed to get schooled up on some stuff (like how to safely use a table saw) and pick up some chisels. I made a bunch of mistakes and the douglas fir splintered and cracked very easily making my mistakes fairly obvious. Still, I managed to get it done and linseed oiled and I present the first Clann table made in 10 years (and the second for anyone other than me in about 15!). Hopefully this will inspire everyone to get together and make some more. Its a beautiful design.

Can you tell which is the new one and which is 10 years old?
