Decoding ancient Roman tablets

There is a great story in the New Yorker about Roger Tomlin, the man who wrote the seminal work on deciphering the Roman wooden, lead, and wax tablets found in Britain. Tomlin is also an editor for the Roman Inscriptions of Britain online which focuses on Latin texts carved in stone.

How to set up email notifications for new posts

This question has been asked several times so I thought it might be a good idea to post a little how to guide. Just having an account on tdbcelts.org forums is not enough to receive email when there is new content. If you log into the site, you can use a couple different methods to see what's new si...

Renting a ring fort

I'm afraid that once you add the cost of plane fare, the cost would knock this off the list of possible venues for events but imagine how totally hatchet it would be to get langered in a (reconstructed) Irish ring fort! As the interpreter guide mentions you can rent the ring fort for a night (you re...

Imbolc Newsletter, 2017

The Feast of Bridget was held in proper style again for the first time in many years. Gathering together in such a large hall with a huge kitchen and a separate common room for the feast was the perfect tonic against the dry cold of the winter months. The Clann was unanimous in the hope that we will...

The Aylesford Bucket Burial

Some of you may recognize the handle attachment of this bucket as Brogan has made a (very good) reproduction of it. From the British Museum Dated: 75 BC - 25 BC (circa) Excavated/Findspot: Aylesford (Europe,British Isles,England,Kent,Aylesford) Aylesford.jpg This wooden bucket (1886,1112.3-7) wrappe...

The truth about the Vomitorium

I don't know how I got to be this old and still thinking that there were such things as Vomitoriums in ancient Rome. This article explains the history of the myth of the Vomitorium; the genesis of the mis-application of the word to a room where Roman leaders would purge themselves.

Re: Horslips - The Tain & The Book of Invasions

Horslips actually has a cribnotes version of The Tain on their website. If you just want the main story its pretty good. I'm not sure who wrote it up, but the page its on also has the lyrics for that album which is nice to reference if you listen to it. http://www.horslips.ie/tain.html The Story One...

Horslips - The Tain & The Book of Invasions

I'm listening to Hoslips today, and if you've never heard of this Irish celtic rock band from the '70s I'm not surprised but of interest to the Clann might be the following two concept albums they made: The Táin - based on the legend of the Táin Bó Cúailnge On Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
